Averting Maternal Death and Disability
Mailman School of Public Health

The Averting Maternal Death and Disability (AMDD) Program was established at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in 1999 with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The central premise of the AMDD program is that most obstetric complications can neither be prevented nor predicted, but they can be treated with emergency obstetric care (EmOC). With almost 600,000 maternal deaths each year, 99% of them in the developing world, AMDD focuses on improving the availability, quality and use of EmOC in developing countries. The program works in partnership with ministries of health, United Nations agencies, and non-governmental organizations that already have field operations, recognized expertise, and close working relations with governments and communities. AMDD now supports 83 projects in 47 countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America carried out by partners including UNICEF, UNFPA, CARE, Save the Children, the Regional Prevention of Maternal Morality (RPMM) Network, and the Reproductive Health Response in Conflict (RHRC) Consortium. To advance the program's work, a range of tools have been developed in collaboration with some of the leading technical experts at Columbia University, and with organizations such as Family Health International, the Indian Institute of Management at Ahmedabad, John Snow International, EngenderHealth, and JHPIEGO, a Johns Hopkins-affiliated organization. Access to these tools is available via the AMDD website at: http://www.amdd.hs.columbia.edu/.
